Shawkat Ali was born on 12 February 1936 at Raniganj, Dinajpur, India. He is a notable novelist of Bangladesh. He passed his Inter of Arts from Surendranath College in 1951 and Bachelor of Arts in 1955. He passed his Master of Arts in Bengali Literature from University of Dhaka in 1958. He worked as school teacher at Thakurgaon for six months. Next he joined in Jagannath College as Bengali teacher in between 1962 to 1987. After that he joined in Dhaka district head office of District Gazetteer as Assistant Director and later become its Director. He was appointed priciple of Government Music College in 1989, where retired in 1993. His renounded works are Prodoshe Prakritojon published in 1984,
He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1968, Ekushey Padak in 1990 by Bangladesh Government.
