Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was born on 27 June 1838 in the village Knathalpara, 24 Paraganas, West Bengal, India. He finished his early education at Midnapur.
He was a Bengali writer, novelist, poet and journalist. He was the composer of India's national song Vande Mataram. He wrote thirteen novels and several serious, serio-comic, satirical, scientific and critical treaties. His works were widely translated into other regional languages of India as well as in English. He is widely regarded as a key feature in literary renaissance of Bengal as well as the broader Indian subcontinent.
